Question Title Web Portal error: "Failed to access properties"
Web Portal error: "Failed to access properties"

Symptom
The error "Failed to access properties" occurs when attempting to open a shared folder which has been published to the AccessMyLan Web Portal.

Explanation
This error means there is an issue with the authentication type which was selected when the Web Folder was confgured on the AccessMyLan administration site. The type of authentication being attempted by AccessMyLan is not matching with what is required by the server hosting the file share.

Resolution

Check which authentication type was specified when setting up the Web Folder:
  1. Open the administration site at www.accessmylan.com
  2. Click on Networks » Web Publishing.
  3. Click on the share name (under Web Folders)
  4. Check which Authentication type is specified.
  • "None required" should only be used for shares which are available to all users, i.e. public folders where no restrictions are applied.
  • "Prompt for credentials" is required where access is being given to a restricted folder and users will need to enter their domain credentials to gain access.
  • "Single-Sign-On" is an option only available where user authentication by single-sign-on is enabled on the VPN. See this document for more details on SSO.  In this case the user is already using their domain credentials to authenticate to the VPN so these can be automatically passed to the file server.
  • "Use Static Credentials" allows the administrator to specify a username and password which will always be used to authenticate Web Portal users to this share.

Check which authentication type is specified for the share on the file server:
  1. Login to the server hosting the fileshare.
  2. Open the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  3. Expand out Websites » Default Website.
  4. Right-click on the share name and go to Properties » Directory Security
  5. Click Edit under 'Authentication and access control'
  6. Ensure that either "Annonymous access" or "Basic Authentication" is selected.
  • "Annonymous access" should only be used where for a share which is available to all users i.e. a public folder where no restrictions are applied.
  • "Basic Authentication" should be used for a share which is restricted to certain users and they must supply their domain credentials to allow them access.
