Question Title ActiveSync error: "Authentication failed at Exchange Server"
ActiveSync error: "Authentication failed at Exchange Server"

Symptom
An ActiveSync mobile device is not successfully synchronizing and this error is shown on the Device details page on the administration website (fig.1.). The error shown on the mobile device will vary depending on the device being used.

Fig.1

Explanation

This error means that the device has made a connection attempt to the Exchange server but the server has rejected that attempt with the message "authentication failed".  This response is caused by an incorrect username or password.

Resolution
Re-enter the username and password on your device and re-try.

Note: During the first setup of an ActiveSync device only 3 connections attempts are permitted before the device is "locked out".  Once the device is "locked out" the administrator will need to delete and recreate it using the administration website.

To re-create the "ActiveSync device" on the administration site:

  1. Login to the administration website at www.accessmylan.com
  2. Click on Users, and then the username required.
  3. Click on the "Cancel Device Activation" button.
  4. Click "Back to user details" and then "Add new device".
  5. Choose "ActiveSync" and "Setup Now" and complete the device setup.
