How do I setup the Web Portal for my VPN?
The AccessMyLan Web Portal provides secure access to web applications and file shares from any Internet browser. Applications and file shares are published by the VPN Administrator who can also control access by application URL or by remote user.
Enabling the Web Portal
Remote access via
the Web Portal is disabled by default when your VPN is created. To enable Web Publishing click on Network then Web Publishing and the "Enable" button. From this page, the
servers, applications and file shares are configured for publishing via
the Portal. The process for publishing a file share or web application is:
-
Define the server that hosts the application or share
-
Publish the application or share.
-
Apply access controls to the application or share (optional)
Defining Network Servers
Before any application can be published, the server hosting it must be added as a "Network Server". On the Web Publishing page choose "Configure Network Servers" from the dropdown menu and then "Add Server...". Enter fully qualified name (FQDN) of the server; i.e. srv01.example.com rather than just srv01.
Publishing Web Applications
Supported
Web applications include Outlook Web Access on Exchange and IBM Lotus
Domino Web Access. Other web applications such as corporate Intranets
are supported but may require advanced configuration.
To publish an application open the Web Publishing page and click on "New..." under the "Published Web Applications" section. Select the Type of application (choose Generic if it’s not listed) and specify a Friendly Name, this is the name which will appear on the Web Portal. On the next screen you can specify the application details. The configurable options for a generic web based application are:
-
Custom Port
Specify a custom port number if the web application is using a port other than 80/443.
-
Server Uses SSL
Enable this feature if the web application requires SSL secured communications. Only enable this feature if the webserver has a certificate and has SSL configured.
-
Prompt for Credentials
Where an application requires authentication, the Portal can prompt for the user credentials or let the application authenticate the user by presenting a login form. If using forms based authentication, ensure that the application is configured to present a login form.
-
Launch Mode
When an application is selected by a user in the Portal, the application can be opened in a new window, in the current Portal window or in a new Portal window. The new window option should be selected where an application does not support running in a frame.
-
Browser Caching Policy
Web browsers can cache website content providing a better user experience. With browser caching disabled, the remote browser is instructed not to cache content. This prevents potentially sensitive content from being stored after the user logs out. Browser caching can also be controlled via the web Portal VPN Plugin. If the VPN Plugin is installed on the browser, it will clear the browser cache when the session terminates
Publishing Web Folders
The Web Portal supports access to any internal WebDAV file share.
WebDAV is a standard method
on Windows, OSX and Linux servers of accessing files via HTTP
. WebDAV publishing may need to be configured on the internal file server. Click here for more information on configuring WebDAV publishing.
Note that while a remote user may have a file share published via the Portal, access to the share and it's contents is subject to the access controls defined on the server.
The Web Portal provides access controls which can be used in addition to the server based controls. Access can be restricted at a user level (include/exclude lists) and at URL level.
To publish a file share
open the Web Publishing page and click on "New..." under the "Published Web Applications" section. Then
on the New Web Folder page enter a Friendly Name which will be used as the icon label in the Portal. Specify the folder URL by selecting the security (HTTP/HTTPS) and server name from the drop down lists. Enter the share alias or leave blank if the share is published at the webserver root.
If the share requires the user to authenticate, select 'Prompt for Credentials' from the authentication drop-down list. Static credentials can be specified if the share uses a single username and password for all user access.
The share can be marked as 'Read Only' which will prevent remote users from modifying or uploading files regardless of what permissions they may have granted by the server. If the share is not marked as 'Read Only', the remote user will be subject to the server defined access controls.
